More thought than Lucas gave it

Keith Martin has re-examined the happenings in the original Star Wars through the filter provided by Revenge of the Sith–and man, I think everything actually makes sense now. I have no idea if what he came up with is anywhere close to what George Lucas had in his head, but I think I’ll choose to count Keith’s version as gospel.

I bet you had no idea how important R2-D2 and Chewbacca were to the Rebellion.

    What Mr. Martin’s come up with is probably much more coherent, and obviously more well thought out than what Lucas scribbled down. Hell, I think Lucas himself re-thought things between Eps IV and V and VI, before he even tinkered with the prequels. Lucas has always seemed more preoccupied with gadgets and sfx, to the detriment of proper story construction.

    Good example: Luke and Leia’s relationship in A New Hope is downright creepy, given what gets revealed in the 2 sequels, if you don’t have Martin’s extrapolations from the prequels to enlighten you. Do you think Lucas had planned for them to be brother and sister all along? I don’t. I’m not even sure he knew when he was drafting Empire Strikes Back, though he seemed to have figured it out by the end of that script.
