This year’s Emmy nominations were announced yesterday, and surprise! No nominations for “Gilmore Girls” for the fifth straight year. I was really, really hoping Lauren Graham might have earned herself a nod this year for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, but oh, no–the overhyped “Desperate Housewives” shrews stole three of the five slots. C’mon, Emmy voters…can you really believe that 60% of the best performances for that category came from one show–one that, while supposedly funny, isn’t even really a comedy?

OK, I’ll give you the amazing Felicity Huffman–even without having seen the show, I’m familiar enough with her to know that she likely deserved her nomination, and I’m glad for her. She should’ve gotten a nomination or two for “SportsNight,” but that’s a whole other rant. But (and again, I admit I haven’t seen the show, though clearly that won’t stop me from judging it) I have a hard time accepting that either Marcia Cross or Teri Hatcher did work more deserving of an Emmy nod than Lauren Graham.

Lauren GrahamGraham’s Lorelai Gilmore is one of the most complex, believable characters on TV, and Graham skillfully portrays her many and varied moods. She’s been doing phenomenal work on that show for five years now, she’s gotten both Screen Actor’s Guild and Golden Globe nominations…but Emmy just won’t come a’callin’, just because her show’s on in the ghettos of the WB. Being on that network seems to kill any chance you’ve got at getting Emmy nods, no matter what quality work you do.

So, Ms. Graham, should you ever come across these words, know that I value the hell out of what you’ve done on that show and if I had any pull with the Emmy voters, you not only would have been nominated several times over but would have at least one statuette on your mantlepiece. Emmy’s about hype, and you don’t get hype on the WB. But you can get respect, which matters more than awards, anyway. (Not that that helps much at salary renegotiation time…)

    Ms. G wasn’t the only was to get snubbed! What about Gale Harold on Showtime’s Queer As Folk?! Just cause he does lots of male on male love scenes, doesn’t mean he is any less of a brillant actor!

    The Emmys suck. I am just glad this is the last year for that God awful piece of shit show, Everyone Loves Raymond, to be nominated.

    Dwight: As much as I appreciate her ability, I’ll admit that the fact that Ms. Graham is about 95% my type (and that 5% is only because I’d love her to say “screw Hollywood’s body image stereotypes” and put on twenty pounds or so) sure doesn’t hurt. :)

    Sandy: By no means do I think she’s the only one who got snubbed, but she’s the one I was most rooting for. At least “Friends,” “Fraiser” and “Sex and the City” were off the air, so that helped bring in some new blood–but all the “new blood” spots went to “Desperate Housewives.” And I’m with you on “Raymond”–I don’t see the big deal. From what I’ve seen, it’s totally standard sitcom fare, so why does it get so many Emmy nominations and wins? I just really don’t get it, and I’ll be happy when those spots are freed up, too. At least “Arrested Development” gets some love from Emmy.

    This is so weird. I was just telling Jay how much this actress reminds me of Terry. I guess it’s not just me. I really like her as an all-around actress, though I’ve never seen Gilmore Girls. I heard that it’s a good show, it’s just not in my roster.

    As for Raymond, I like it. I think his parents are funny as hell! I don’t know if it deserves all of the accolades it has gotten, but it makes me laugh. I think the Fruit of the Month club scene is one of the funniest.

    One show that could annoy me as much as make me laugh was Seinfeld. OY! Sometimes I just couldn’t watch it because it just annoyed the heck out of me. Other times, “He took….it…..out!” it was hysterical.

    Michelle, I definitely think you should watch “Gilmore Girls.” The first three seasons are out on DVD now, and the fourth comes out in September. I think you’d really dig it–very witty dialogue, great characters. I didn’t steer you wrong with “Firefly,” did I? :)

    And yeah, more than a couple of people have said that Lauren Graham reminds them of Terry.

    On “Raymond”: Agreed–seemed funny enough, from what I saw, but “funny enough” shouldn’t equal scads of Emmys.

    On “Seinfeld”: Also agreed–for every episode that was pretty damn funny, there were several others that just…weren’t. Also a show I just never “got,” I think.

    Lauren Graham is one of the best actresses that I have ever seen!Gilmore Girls is the best show, you all should watch it if you don’t already!! Not to mention… Alexis Bledel ROCKS!!!!!
