What’s so “intelligent” about it?
John Rogers over at Kung Fu Monkey rants eloquently about our President’s desire to force the concept of “Intelligent Design” into our education system as an equally valid counterpoint to evolution, thereby ensuring that our children are doomed to end up a bunch of retards.
One of the things that has pissed me off most about this administration is their continued belief that we Americans are as bright as midnight and will just accept whatever horseshit they feed us without thinking about the meanings or ramifications of said horseshit at all. If they say it, it’s true because they said it.
Intelligent design (some God-like being pushed the development of life along, but we’re not going to call that God-like force “God” because we don’t want you thinking ID is anything at all like creationism, oh no) is a story made up by fundmaentalists to explain their worldview and validate their religious beliefs; evolution is a sceintific theory which has stood up to 150 years of rigorous testing and accurately describes the way life on this planet survives and thrives. If you want to believe in ID or creationism because your religion calls for you to do so, fine, that’s certainly your right; that doesn’t mean it needs to be taught in our public schools. Dubya’s comments are yet another example of the ultra-right-wing contingent currently in power trying to force their societal beliefs and standards on everyone.
Does Rogers perhaps overreact in his rant? I’ll leave that for you to decide, but I personally don’t think he does: the problem here isn’t this one statement of Dubya’s (though it is a problem in and of itself) as much as it is the mindset it represents.
